China is the largest importer of Turkmen resources

The Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs has launched the “Central Asia Resource Tracker”, a new tool that consolidates fragmented public data on over 100 commodities across the Central Asian region. The data gives a comprehensive view on the region’s trade dependencies and economic landscape, with a specific spotlight on Turkmenistan’s economic structure.

The data reveals that Turkmenistan’s export economy is overwhelmingly driven by natural gas, which accounts for approximately 94% of its tracked exports, totaling $10.7 billion of the $11.4 billion tracked by the tool. Beyond gas, Turkmenistan exports urea ($606 million), primarily used as fertilizer, and iodine ($75 million).

The analysis highlights a massive reliance on China as a trade partner, which imports $9.6 billion worth of these resources. This single-country dominance significantly outpaces other trade partners such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and others, showing the high level of concentration in Turkmenistan’s export market.
