Limited Response to Methane Emissions Notifications in Turkmenistan

The most recent update in April from the UNEP’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) reveals the latest major methane emission events globally, gathering data from over 30 satellites. MARS notifications are sent to countries where high emissions are detected, with a request to respond to UNEP with emission status, the cause of emissions, and what action is taken or planned.

Turkmenistan, alongside Kazakhstan, has the highest number of successful mitigation events, with 8 separate methane leaks stopped following MARS notifications. However, Turkmenistan’s response rate to MARS notifications in 2025 was only around 20%. While the country has received almost 170 emission notifications – the second-highest globally – feedback was not provided for 79% of these sources.

The data from the last 6 months shows that 11 out of the top 50 major emission events occurred in Turkmenistan. Out of the top 10 events, 4 were in Turkmenistan, all caused by the oil and gas sector near the Caspian Sea. The events and locations are shown in the table below.
